Robert Gore - 1992 1992 Robert Gore
Robert H. Gore was owner and publisher of the Ft. Lauderdale Daily News for 35 years. During that time, he played a major role in the development and growth of Broward County and South Florida.

He was a reporter and editor for several midwest newspapers prior to becoming publisher of the Terra Haute (IN) Post at the age of 30. He developed a direct marketing life insurance program and left the Post in 1921 to successfully pursue that career.

In 1929, Gore bought the Ft. Lauderdale Daily News and concentrated on local news and issues important to the community. He helped drive widespread gambling and rum-running from the county, fought to preserve the environment, and encouraged tourism and the construction of schools and churches.

In 1963, he sold the Daily News and several other Florida newspapers he had acquired to pursue a distinguished career in politics, which included a term as Governor of Puerto Rico.
